2018 is shaping up to be an insanely good year for horror. From sequels of well-loved franchises to low-budget classics that demonstrated that a good story and smart editing is all that requires to scare you out of your wits, the year so far has produced some really good stomach-churning horror. If you are someone curating a list of horror movies to watch during your free time, you have come to the right place. Viewers have had the privilege of watching artsy and existential terrors to gory revenge thrillers.
- Insidious: Last Key
Not every horror franchise can keep audience interested even after the third movie, but the Insidious series has achieved just that. While not as good as its predecessors, the Last Key has some legitimate scares that will leave horror fans delighted.
It may not technically be an out-and-out horror film, but Annihilation is one of the most visually arresting films of the year, filled with mysteries and atmospheric tension that will leave you on the edge of your seats. It effectively explores existential terror and leaves the audience a lot to think about, even after they are done watching the film.
- A Quiet Place
Perhaps no horror film has made better use of silence to build sheer terror in the minds of audiences. It’s been a sleeper hit, generating acclaim from critics and viewers alike. The film showcased the talents of director, writer and star John Krasinski.
If you are a horror fan, chances are high that you have seen at least one of those rape/revenge thrillers in your life. Most of these films are slim and poorly constructed to really scare you. But Revenge is a beautiful, visceral, and brightly colored take on this sub-genre. It has more intelligence, intensity and a welcome change in perspective.
- Ghost Stories
Anthologies are nothing new to the horror genre. There are a pretty good number of anthology films out there but only few manage to thread each story into the larger narrative framework of the film as effectively as Ghost Stories. It’s dark and funny, bolstered by excellent performances by Martin Freeman, Alex Lawthur and Paul Whitehouse. It is filled with classic thrills and chills.
This is not an exhaustive list, as there are a few more good horror movies that came out this year. Most of these are now available online, if you are looking for horror movies to watch.
